Luso Canadian Charitable Society

Luso Canadian Charitable Society, a non-government funded registered charity under the CRA, has been supporting persons with disabilities and their families since 2003. Through Adult Day Programs and Overnight Respite services, Luso aims to reduce isolation and empower individuals with special needs to reach their potential in a safe and thriving environment. The organization operates three Luso Support Centres in Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton, with a new Hamilton location set to offer 24/7 specialized supportive housing.

Programming Overview

Life Skills: Participants learn everyday tasks, emotional expression, and social interaction, with activities like cooking and baking focused on safety and healthy eating. Literacy, numeracy, and personalized learning promote independence and problem-solving.

Wellbeing: Activities such as stretching, breathing exercises, and group fitness support physical, mental, and emotional health. Programs help maintain agility and boost energy, lifting morale and enhancing daily life.

Community Integration: Real-life activities like visiting businesses and volunteering foster social skills and independence. These outings boost self-esteem and help participants connect with the community.

Technology Training: Participants learn computer skills and internet use in supervised settings. Smartboards with interactive games and educational tools enhance cognitive and technical skills, while assignments and projects improve research and communication/presentation abilities.

Socialization: Group activities including music, dance, theatre, and storytelling foster social skills and relationships. Annual events offer opportunities for community connection and celebrate achievements.

Creative Arts: Art programs featuring various mediums like painting and jewelry making stimulate creativity and self-expression. Participants’ artwork is displayed and sold, recognizing their talents and building self-confidence.

Sensory Experiences: Multi-Sensory Rooms provide calming environments with soothing sounds, lights, and tactile experiences for relaxation and anxiety reduction. Sensory stimulation supports positive interaction and well-being.

Respite Care: Offers caregivers a break, ensuring loved ones receive quality care in a safe environment. The Toronto facility provides accessible rooms and social spaces for short-term stays, giving families peace of mind.
